Heath Zenith SL-4151-BR1 Mission Style 150-Degree Motion Sensing Decorative Security Light, Rustic Brown

Cheap Heath Zenith SL-4151-BR1 Mission Style 150-Degree Motion Sensing Decorative Security Light, Rustic Brown Review

Heath and Zenith are names I remember, so I figured this light would last longer than the previous generic brand I bought at a box store. It only lasted maybe 300 cycles.

The H-Z is attractive, has real bevelled glass, a 30-foot range and several settings for time on and such. It is heavy and seems very rugged. It isn't a lightweight or cheesy light. The finish seems durable, but of course only time will tell.

It also has a "Dual-Brite" feature. What this means is that there is a mode where the light will get just enough power to make the bulb filament just glow. In this mode it serves as an accent light and the low-volt glow is kind of orange, so it looks like an old gas flame. This wasn't a feature I was interested in, but it is there.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get the low-volt mode to turn off. Motion would turn the light on bright, as it should, but when it turned off, the glow mode would activate and wouldn't go away.

I called the number on the warranty/instruction booklet and got an actual American. He said he would get another one out of stock, test it and send it. He did, and it works fine.

Why five stars for a product that was defective? Well, the lamp is very nice and everyone knows that a small percentage of electronic products fail. No product is any better than the support, so I can report that H-Z stands behind its product. If they didn't, then there would be a scathing one-star review.

I did look at the module of the SL-4151 and compared it to my original melted one. The one in the H-Z is much bigger and better looking, so I'll expect it to last. I have other motion-activated lights that have worked for over fifteen years, so it is possible.

So, rugged and good looking, versatile and good customer support equals five stars.

I suggest getting a clear lamp for it. Looks better than a frosted type bulb and the low-volt feature precludes a fluorescent. It isn't on enough to worry about energy saving anyway.

I now have 4 of these lighting areas around my house. I had been using cheaper lights that didn't have the low-high motion detector settings, and they just didn't last. Finally started using these 6 years ago. Should have done that long before. So far I have changed 2 bulbs in 6 years, with one only lasting 4 years. These have paid for themselves in savings on electricity and just working faithfully for years! When I think back to those other lamps I was using, and having to replace them every year or two, these are a dream come true! I used my ladder to mount two on the back of the house 3 years ago, and I haven't been on a ladder for lighting since! Durable, efficient, and fairly easy to install and set up. I would recommend using a hookup that is controlled by a light switch, just in case you have to replace a bulb in a few years.

I needed 2 lights for both sides of my front entry and bought one first, just to see if it was all it's said to be. I got the second about a week later. I can't say its the sturdiest assembly I've ever seen, but then again how sturdy does a light like this need to be?
It works as advertised... I have them lit with 15 watt incandescents, on low they have a nice faint glow, barely enough to light my 30 foot long porch. When the motion sensor is activated, there's a nice amount of light to see your way, or to light up someone approaching. The motion sensor is very sensitive at the high setting, 40 feet +. Both were turned down to about mid-way, and they're now perfect for my installation.
I can't comment on long-term service as I've only had these about a month, but if you like the look, and want the function this light has (dual-bright), go for it. I've been satisfied so far.
