WATT STOPPER / LEGRAND RS-250-I-CS LIGHT AND FAN CONTROLS SWITCH

Cheap WATT STOPPER / LEGRAND RS-250-I-CS LIGHT AND FAN CONTROLS SWITCH Review

As noted in other reviews this sensor works with most types of loads. It has a noticeable click when it comes on so I assume it's a relay contact. No trouble working with florescent lights with electronic ballasts. The sensing range seems fine for my application (but I'm not asking it to "see" that far). All in all, seems like a good unit.

What do I want it for? A few years ago I put a used occupancy sensor in our detached garage. It was an old used unit that I got from work. It seemed a bit hoaky, but it worked. It has a slider switch built in that selects OFF-AUTO-ON. I leave it in auto and when we drive into the garage late at night, voila - on come the florescent lamps. Sure beats the puny garage door opener lights. Both my wife and I have become accustomed to having the convenience of full lighting when we roll into the garage. If I am working in my garage I turn the sensor to ON so it won't turn off if I'm under the car.

It was my wife's idea to get a sensor for her sister. They have a detached garage like ours and we like ours so much it seemed like good idea. Searching for sensors was an education. I was surprised to find how few occupancy sensor were in the stores. Home Depot only had one sensor and it did not have an override switch and would only work with incandescent lights (uses a cheap bi-polar electronic switch). Finally I found the WattStopper unit on Amazon. It has good specs and works as advertised EXCEPT for one thing. There is no MANUAL ON feature if you're using the unit in occupancy mode. What this means is that if you are going to work under your car, there is not way to override the sensor to keep the lights on permanently. The work-around is to set the adjustable timer to a bit longer duration (say 15 minutes) or to add another switch to bypass the sensor. Adding a switch requires some extra installation effort. Setting the timer longer wastes some power. This is not a deal killer and may have no relevance to many applications, but I thought I should point it out. In general I am pleased with the product.
